Cipao with KSW belt after the fight with Kulak in 2006

One of the most talented polish fighter Michal Materla (13-3) who’s also bjj brown belt will fight one more time against Krzysztof Kulak (24-12-2). The first fight between them took place at KSW 6 in 2006, and was won by Michal via guillotine choke. . Cipao hasn’t fight since 2009 because of serious knee injury. Now he want to fight as fast as is possible, look what he said to konfrontacja.com about his rematch with Kulak.

I’m really happy to return to the ring after the two-year break. I look forward to my fight at KSW 15, on March 19th in Torwar, Warsaw. The last few years were very hard for me because of many injuries. During this time I had a lot of support from my family, friends, coaches and other people who helped me a lot. I’d like to really thank my main trainer Piotr Baginski as well as my boxing coach Karol Chabros and all fighters from Berserkers Team Szczecin and Top Team. Just like they’ve been always out there for me, I’ll be always out there for them. At the moment I’m getting back in shape working diligently on my cardio. I enjoy fighting, I don’t do it because I have it, I just want to be the best. I want to test myself, feel the sweat, blood, adrenaline, fatigue and taste the victory at the end. As for my fight against Krzysztof Kułak I have one thing to say, I beat him at KSW 6 and I’ll beat again. I’m a fighter who always fights his heart out and never retreats. I always give 100%. Krzysztof Kulak has many different faces, it’s hard to tell which is the true one. What’s important he’s always there to entertain the crowd and fans love him. He’s also very experienced and after ten years of professional career he finally won the title. I want to win the upcoming fight thanks to my superior skills, my determination and heart, following the fair-play rules, that’s who I am. Kulak has to be aware that even if he plays foul or break the KSW rules for instance using baby oil or other lubricants, he still won’t get away from me (laughing).

The award ceremony for the Athletes of the Year will take place on the occasion of the 2011 European Championship in Yuzhny.

As per 2011, FILA will implement a world ranking of all athletes competing in the FILA events with live update of their score on the FILA website. It will be a very powerful tool to use by the National Federations and athletes for their approaches to the media and sponsors. In order to encourage the participation in international tournaments and avoid ties in points, 4 additional tournaments – called FILA Grand Prix – will be included in the world ranking. All National Federations and Committees can apply for a FILA Grand Prix if they want to see their tournament count for the world ranking. The best candidates will be selected by the World Grappling & Pankration Committee upon analysis of their bid. In order to stimulate the activity and further reward the athletes with cash prizes, FILA will also raise an annual fund that will be evenly split among the 8 Athletes of the Year in each discipline. More details on the world ranking can be found in the Regulations for the Nomination of the Athletes of the Year.

FILA warmly congratulates the 2010 laureates for their great achievement and wishes plenty of success to all athletes who will enter the race for next year’s nominations!

Can you please introduce yourself to our readers and describe in a few words how your jiu jitsu adventure started?

My name is Mackenzie Dern and I’m a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. My dad is black belt, Megaton Dias and my stepmom, Luciana Dias is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Fortunately, instead of a babysitter, my dad took me to his academy where he introduced me to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when I was 3 years old.

How long have you been training?

Well, my first tournament was when I was 6 years old, but I have been learning Jiu-Jitsu for 14 years starting when I was 3.

Where do you live and train at the moment?

Currently, I’m living in Arizona where I train with my dad at Megaton Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. But I’m actually in the process of moving to Brasil in February. There I will train at the Gracie Humaita headquarters in Rio.

With who do you spare the most?

On a daily basis I definitely train with my dad the most. We have specific trainings in the mornings and we have night classes where we train together again. I also go to San Diego a lot where I try to get as much training possible with Leticia Ribeiro at her academy and at Gracie San Diego.

Despite your young age you have had some success in various competitions, could you share with us some of your titles?

Yes, thankfully starting at a young age, good results are starting to appear and I have been able to make a few good accomplishments so far. My main titles are 4x World Champion all at blue belt. I am also 3x No-Gi World Champion, 2x American National Champion, European Champion, Rio International Champion weight and absolute, and South American Champion weight and absolute.

What is your biggest success and why?

My biggest success so far are probably my world titles. Of course winning a world title as a blue belt is not the same as winning when your a black belt. That for me is my biggest goal right now. But to be a 4x World Champion shows me that the dedication to my training is paying off. It feels so good once you accomplish something that you work so hard for. Of course the hard work does not end here, there are still many things I want to accomplish in my career

Your father is legendary Megaton Diaz, do you often train together? Does he give you a lot of tips?

Yes, I train with my dad a lot. Almost everyday we train together. Many people think that he teaches me secret moves, or takes me aside and teaches me special stuff, but it’s not like that at all. I learn positions and tips from him the same way his students do, by watching him teach positions in class and then drilling. When we roll its hard training all the time. . . He knows my weaknesses and puts me in bad situations and then I learn from him that way. Plus, we are almost always talking about positions, defenses, submissions, its always good getting his opinion!

Can you name a few fighters with whom you had the pleasure to roll and who made the biggest impression on you?

Luckily, I have been able to train with black belts like Royler Gracie, Leticia Ribeiro, Regis Lebre, Penny Thomas and also a lot of people from my generation like Beatriz Mesquita, Ana Carolina Vidal, and Zak Maxwell. I learn so many things from all of these people and they all have helped make me the fighter I am today. However, Leticia made one of the biggest impressions on me. Being committed to Jiu-Jitsu for women, a multiple time world champion and a great instructor Leticia is a big inspiration for me.

Beatriz Mesquita, Leticia Ribeiro and Mackenzie Dern

What are your plans for 2011?

My plans for 2011 are to be as consistent as possible. I plan to compete about every two months. So far, what I have planned are the Abu Dhabi Trials in Portugal, European Championships, Pan American Championships and Worlds. We will see what else comes up!

How does your training camp look like when you are preparing for the biggest competitions?

My training before a tournament is usually in San Diego. I go down there about 3 weeks before a tournament. I train in the mornings with Leticia and the girls from her camps. We also have Raphael Romano work with Ginastica Natural before the tournaments. After, is physical conditioning. By 3 weeks left I usually switch my strength training to my cardio and losing weight. Then of course we hit the sauna and pool for some relaxing! At night, I have intense training at Gracie San Diego. I follow this schedule until the day before the tournament.

What do you do apart from BJJ. What is Mackenzie Dem like, privately?

Aside from Jiu-Jitsu I am pretty active. I ride horses, snowboard and go to the movies. I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. A lot of the time I am traveling, so it is hard to have a specific routine. When in Brasil or San Diego, my friends and I stay on the beach and eat a lot of sushi. . two great things after Jiu-Jitsu

Big, popular fighters live BJJ. They train, give seminars and runt heir own academies. Do you also want to devote yourself entirely to the sports and try to making a living of it?

I made the decision to completely commit to my future in Jiu-Jitsu when I was 13 years old. If I can make a living by doing something I love, I will never have to work a day in my life! I have been lucky enough to help Leticia with some seminars and this year I will accompany my dad in a tour of seminars throughout Europe. Besides being a competitor, I am learning how to be a teacher so I can have a successful academy in the future.

Do you like fighting No-GI? Would you like to compete at ADCC one day?

I like Jiu-Jitsu, whether it is with or without the Gi. I think No-Gi is a lot faster and it is a challenge. I have fun with No-Gi. Yes, the ADCC is definitely on my To Do List. It is a prestigious tournament and I would love to eventually take part in it.

What do you like best in grappling, sweeps, takedowns, finishing techniques? What is your favorite action/technique?

I train hard to be as versatile as possible. I think it is really important to be comfortable no matter where you are, whether you are on top or on bottom. Because of this, I like almost everything. I am really comfortable with my sweeps, passes, and I also like take downs. Of course, there are certain positions I prefer than others. For example, I prefer open guard then closed guard. Catching the big is definitely one of my favorite positions

Many women consider BJJ to be a brutal sport, how would you encourage them to try jiu jitsu instead of going to fitness classes?

Jiu-Jitsu is translated as „the gentle art”. What martial art corzuld be better for girls then one that is called „the gentle art”? Jiu-Jitsu is to help a smaller/weaker person defend themselves from a bigger/stronger person. Not only does it provide a great self defense, especially for women but it keeps us in shape, giving cardio and toning the body.

Which female fighter is in your opinion number one in GI and NO-GI for this moment?

In my opinion, the best female competitor, with Gi, right now is Beatriz Mesquita. She went through the whole year competing almost every other month and she won almost everything. And for No-Gi, I think Michelle Nicolini did really good this year. At the No-Gi worlds she won the absolute and got 2nd place in her weight class.

Do you like watching MMA? Do you have a favorite fighter?

I enjoying watching MMA. Mostly because it is a time for barbeque and hanging out with friends. Plus, it is fun when you see the guys do positions like armbars and chokes that you train in class. My favorite fighter is GSP!

How do guys react when they get to know that you train this sport with so much success?

Hahaha There are definitely mixed reactions when it comes to guys knowing about my life in Jiu-Jitsu. A lot of them think its cool and want to try it out too! Others get a little intimidated. . especially when they find out how involved my dad is in the sport.

Have you changed because of jiu jitsu? Mentally or physically?

Jiu-Jitsu definitely changed me and the way I live. Physically, I eat healthier and it keeps me working out to stay in good physical condition. Mentally, Jiu-Jitsu has changed the way I think about my wins and losses. In the beginning, I used to feel so much pressure to win in tournaments. I was scared to lose and disappoint all the people who wanted me to win. But the more I won and the more I lost, I saw that my fans will always be my fans whether I win or lose. Everyone has their time to win and their time to lose, its just part of the game. Now, I focus on having a good fight. I love the feeling after a fight, whether I won or lost, that I gave a good fight.

Why do you think women’s fights look different than men’s?

Women, in my opinion, have a more forward game. Rarely do we see women fights where they are stalling. The majority of us are small, quick, flexible and I think all these things plus technique make the fights have a lot more movement. This is different compared to the Jiu-Jitsu of the 3x Absolute World Champion Roger Gracie, who shows the efficiency of the most basic Jiu-Jitsu. Both completely different styles, but both exciting to watch!

Thank you for your time. If you would like to thank anyone or greet, please don’t hesitate

I like to thank my family and friends who give me all the support in the world! I also would like to thank my sponsors ATAMA Kimonos, Versatile Fighter, and Fight Soap for all the help. I would like to thank IBJJF for putting on so many good tournaments around the world. And I would like to thank www.grapplerinfo.pl for the interview and I hope soon I can visit Poland and be able to train down there!

When and why did you start your BJJ adventure.

I started Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when I was 15 years old. I started training BJJ because I was cut from the high school Basketball team and my father wanted me to stay in shape and that is when I took up the art of BJJ.

What is in your opinion a path to success and BJJ mastery?

In my opinion in order to be succesful you need to patient and really play close attention to the technical aspect of BJJ in the early stages like white belt, blue belt and purple belt. The only way to master BJJ is drilling the techniques millions of times!! until you master the technique!

What tournament plans do you have for 2010/2011?

My tournaments for 2011 so far are the European Championships and of course all of the other major ones like Pan Ams, Brazilian Nationals and Mundials!!!!

As a comeptitor how do you rate European Champioships in Lisbon?

I will rate the European Championships as one of the best and toughest tournaments in the world!! The level of bjj in Europe is growing very strong! and also alot of people come from all over the world to compete in this tournament. This is an amazing event, one of my favorites and I am looking forward to fighting in it this year!

Your fight with Michael Langhi was very close, what do you think was missing from your game, what else do you think you should have done to win?

Yes Michael Langhi and I had a VERY close match in last years Europeans. What was missing from game was the experience, when I fought him I was a very brand new Black Belt, which I still am but I feel have gained alot of tournament experience over the last year.

Can you tell me what is your training regiment?

My training regiment consists of a lot of specific drilling of positions and transitions, and I will do these every day! Team Lloyd Irvin also have a strong strength and conditioning coach/program, that we follow very strictly through out the week. Team Lloyd Irvin also has some top secret training regimens that I can not reveal. The only way for people to learn about them is to come to the academy and train!

You have won Arizona Open tournament. Can you pelase elaborate on your fights?

The Arizona was a great ran tournament and I had two very good matches, the first one against Shamir Chantre and the second one against Caio Terra. In my First match I worked my top game and worked the pass until I took the back and finished with an armlock. In the finals I fought Caio Terra and there I also worked my top game but we ended playing a little bit of 50/50 and from there I pulled an armlock. I was very happy to of have great matches with two great fighters. Winning this tournament also got me a ticket to Europe! so I was very happy! Thanks to Gustavo Dantas for putting up a great show!

Why are you called „Spiderman” by your friends?

I am called spiderman because I try to tie up my opponents with my grips the same way spiderman tries to tie up the bad guys in his webs.

What’s your take on MMA? Are you considering taking part in MMA fights?

I love MMA! I am a huge fan of MMA. I think if it wasnt for MMA, BJJ wouldnt be as popular as it is today. I for sure want to fight MMA one day, first I have to win the Mundials as a Black Belt and then I will fight.

What is your favourite move or position?

My favourite position is taking the back!

What do you think about prize fight between Cobinha and Mendes?

I really wish that fight would have happened because both fighters are amazing! and It would been like a fight to the death between to great gladiators!

Who do you admire as a BJJ role model? Do you have any idols? Why do you admire them?

I really admire Jacare, Bibiano Fernandes, Terere and my Instructor Master lloyd Irvin. The reason why I admire the fighters I mentioned above is because they are amazing fighters that always pushed hard in there fights, they are relentless! Which Is what I love.

What can you tell about importance of strength training in BJJ?

If you want a legit shot of becoming a world champion you MUST have a very good strength and conditioning program! It is very important especially in the high levels of BJJ where everyone is very technical, sometimes the fights come down to stamina and who can outlast who.

What do you think about level of BJJ players in Europe?

I have been out to Europe 2 years in a row and this upcoming event will be my third year back, and every year I have went back I felt the European players technical level rise to a whole another level year after year. The Europeans also have very strong wrestling and Judo, which makes them very dangerous.

Where do you live? Where do you train?

I Live in Maryland, right down the street from the Master Lloyd’s main academy, which is where I train everyday.

Tell us about your BJJ academy?

The academy is amazing, we have a full size cage, full size ring, weights, and two mat rooms. More importantly the students within the academy are amazing, we are all a family and we al have the same goal and that is to become champion.

What do you do in your time free from BJJ? What do you do in your spare time?

When I am not training BJJ, I am watching BJJ videos or lifting weights. I live a champion lifestyle. I also try to spend my time with my family.

Thank you very much Guys

Poland. Day 1- As always it was a great time to teach the guys here. There are 4 main schools and all the instructors are really united and organized. The city of Poznan is really beautiful. Lots of old buildings with lots of history and it is the center of commerce and fairs of the country. The seminar, as in Greece, was held at the Judo Olympic center. Huge mat area. It is always full of people here but this year was even more…..more than 120 people, easy on the mats! We had a morning session with the GI and afternoon NOGI. The level of the fighters here is great and they are improving more and more. It is an army! Awesome! After the seminar, we had great food at a typical Polish restaurant.

Day 2- Sunday was the day to make a big and intense training session ( since the national BJJ tournament is coming) and there was a sea of people….I split the group in lightweights and heavy weights and we did competition training, similar to what we do in BH and in Houston. They loved it! Again, the great level of technical level was awesome! After this intense training, there was time to graduate the students form GB Poland. Lots of people…..The highlights were the brown and black belts. Robert and Marciel got their Black Belts and now in Poland there are 3 GB Black belts under me. Slwavec is the first BB, graduated by me last year, and he does a wonderful job with his students. Robert and Marciel are his older and top ones now. They are training BJJ for over 8 years and are among the best in Europe in their weight classes. European champions, ADCC qualifier champions and both are from the FILA grappling Polish team. After the seminar, there was a sea of people to take pictures and sign their belts. Took me one hour to do so but I would do it anytime because the guys are great with an awesome vibe.
Tomorrow it will be a day off ( finally). Will do some sightseeing here and Tuesday morning, go to Warsaw to catch my flight to Amsterdan, where I have a two day seminar.
Get back to you guys soon.
Miss you all. Train hard and see you soon.
All the best.
Draculino.

„It was my first time to visit Zagreb and luckily I had two extra days to get to know the city: my trip to Croatia was great, not least due to the good success in the European Championships.

The brackets were not the easiest for me and I had several tough fights. First opponent was Josip Artukovic from Croatia who I managed to submit quite quickly. Second opponent was Zbigniew Tyszka from Poland. I fought against him a tight fight in the European Championships 2008, so I expected he won’t let me go easy this time either. I was right and the match took 12 minutes and I won by points. In the semifinals I fought against Brazilian Eduardo Rios. I have fought against his students before and they all have really good jujitsu and I had seen Eduardos fights and knew he will be a tough opponent. The match did not start the best way, since in the beginning of the fight he passed my guard and took my back. Luckily, this happened in the no-points period. The fight was going 0-0 but then in the last minute I managed to take his back (though, he was standing) and win the fight with points.

The final was against my team mate Toni Linden. We have trained together several times and I know we are pretty even. The fight was really intensive, even though it took the maximum time of 20 minutes. Toni had some nice submission attempts but at the end I got the takedown and passed his guard winning the European title. It feels great to be able to represent Finland ones more in ADCC World Championships. I have already been there twice and fought against Demian Maia and Rafael Lovato Jr. Lets see who I face this time.

The competition in Zagreb was very well organized, the matches took place in three fight areas and the fights went on smoothly. Also the refereeing part worked really well, and at least I didn’t notice any major errors in that part. However, I did not like the new, BJJ style, weigh-in system where the weigh-in is made just before the fights. This way the fighters have to worry about their weight until the first fight begins, instead of completely concentrating on the fights. Of course, the good thing is that fighters can not lose so much weight within the last few days, which means that fighters weights are closer to each other. For me the new system is not a problem though, because I have always been a little bit underweight to my category.

My next fights will probably be in BJJ European Open on January. Last year I got bronze medal in black belts and silver medal in national teams, so this time I’m naturally going for the gold. Later in the spring I will also be heading to the Mundials.

My career is looking good, since I’m still improving, though I won my first grappling tournament already in the last millennium. I have been lucky to be able to train in our academy TJJK in the city of Tampere, which is one of the best grappling academies in Europe. For example, in Croatia our three member team took gold medals in three weight category out of the five available. I don’t believe I could have been as successful if I would have been training somewhere else.I also want to welcome everybody to train with us, so if you ever come to Finland, take your training gear with you and visit our academy.

Finally I would like to thank Pit Bull West Coast for the clothing they have provided for me and Attic Sports for other training equipments”

Today we are presenting an extensive interview with one of the best young jiu jitsu players in Europe. Brown belt Englishman under Roger Gracie, Oliver Geddes. Enjoy!

At first, could you say in a few words how you started training brazilian jiu jitsu and why did you choose this sport?

I started training in Brazilian Jiu jitsu when I was training various more traditional martial arts (Muay Thai, Boxing, Kung Fu) at a school close to my house that also offered BJJ. I thought I would give it a try as well, just for a session or so a week. But I was hooked pretty quickly (for various reasons, mainly because it just had so much complexity, and it allowed someone who wasn’t really all that fit such as myself to be competitive against larger, more athletic individuals), began training it more than any other martial art, and eventually moved up to London to train full-time at a larger academy.

Where do you train now, and who is the head instructor there?

I train at the Roger Gracie Academy in London. Right now the head instructor at our branch is Lucio ‘Lagarto’ Rodrigues, since Roger is teaching primarily at another branch in London, but we have had a lot of different instructors over the past few years, including Roger for an extended period of time, Felipe Souza, Jude Samuel, Gustavo Pires, and others. So there have been a lot of influences!

You hold a brown belt in bjj, how long did it take you to get it and who awarded you with it?

I received my Brown Belt from Roger Gracie after 4 and a half years of training.

Can you say a few words about your training? How many times a week do you train? Do you focus only on BJJ or maybe it’s also MMA, wrestling or boxing?

I try to train somewhere between eight and eleven times a week. Usually I don’t quite manage that, but even on a bad week, I’m doing at least six. In terms of focus, I pretty much just train gi BJJ. I don’t do a lot of no-gi training, but I have a good enough BJJ base that in No-Gi, I can still handle myself, even if it’s not what I spend most of my time training for.

You fought with some Polish guys, Maciej Linke, Marcin Held, Maciej Polok and Robert Trzcionka at the Abu Dhabi finals. Who was the toughest opponent?

Well, this is going to sound kind of rude, but of all those, Maciej Linke, since he tapped me and the rest I (only just!) managed to beat. All of them are really really tough, though. Both my legs cramped up from holding Robert in a triangle for almost a whole fight, so I could barely walk after that fight. Marcin was getting the better of me until he got disqualified. Maciej I won a decision, with us on the same number of points and advantages. So…all of them are animals. On a personal note, I remember training with Maciej in London when he was a Purple Belt and I was a Blue Belt and he absolutely destroyed me, so to beat him, even that narrowly in competition meant an awful lot to me. Congratulations to him on his Black Belt and Marcin on his Brown Belt, by the way!

When a competition is comming do you train in a special way or is it the same type of training done systematically?

Honestly, I compete so often that I don’t really train specially for a competition, unless it’s the Worlds or something that the whole academy is training together for, in which case we have additional sessions to work on our competition preparation. I just try to train every day, preferably twice, and not let myself get out of shape. Then whatever the competition is, I try to be ready.

Despite your young age you have already won some major titles in BJJ. Which of them is the most important for you and why?

I’m really not that young compared to some of the fighters out there! I still think the Europeans has to be the most important title I’ve won, and to do it two years in a row, and even better the second time around, was a great feeling. The IBJJF competitions will always have more prestige than anything short of the ADCC, so to get a chance to accomplish something on that level means a lot to me.

Do you have plans to compete in MMA and try to make your living as an MMA fighter?

I have plans to compete in MMA, yes. But not to try and make a living off it. It’s hard enough to make a living as a Jiujitsu instructor, and without making it to the very elite level of MMA, you’re going to be earning far less. I will fight, but only for the experience and to test myself. One sport is enough for me, right now!

Did you have a chance to train with some elite fighters. If so, could you name them and describe how it all happened

I’ve rolled with a few high level guys, yeah. Obviously, I train with Roger Gracie fairly regularly, I’ve also rolled with Victor and Braulio Estima, when they come down to train with him. Lucio ‘Lagarto’ Rodrigues also teaches at the academy, so I train with him also, plus his assistant instructor from his own academy, Lucio Sergio. I don’t really attend seminars much, but I’m lucky to attend an academy where so many big names come to train.

What is your dream in sport?

I’d like to be able to live from jiujitsu, and I’d like to have achieved enough in competition that I am remembered for it. In the end, I’d also like to produce students who are champions as well.

What are your main objectives for the future?

Right now, I’m looking at the major gi competitions coming up. So I’ll be trying to qualify for the Abu Dhabi Pro again, as well as doing the Euros, the Pans and the Worlds. Basically the majors, with enough other competitions to keep me sharp in between. Then the black belt, then who knows. ^_^

Do you prefer to fight from the top or on your back using guard?

Honestly, I like both. My strength is on my back, but I have a good top game that I spend a lot of time working in the academy. I just play to my strongest points, which is usually my guard. If it goes other places, it goes other places, and that’s cool with me.

Is there a fighter who is a role model for you or somebody whose style you like best? If so, who is it?

Honestly, not really. I take little pieces from a lot of fighters’ games, but there’s no single person that I try to emulate. Everyone has something to teach, and getting too focused on one fighter can harm your own development, so I just try techniques that I see. If they work for me, great. If not, there’s always more out there.

In your fights do you focus on submissions or getting control and win with points? I’m asking because a lot of fights during Mundial finishes with 2:0 with a sweep or with advantage points. What do you think about such results?

In general, I like to try and submit someone for the first four or five minutes of a fight. If I can’t, then I’ll switch to trying to outscore them. It’s very difficult to submit someone with not much time left in a fight, so generally I’ll focus on getting the win and moving onto the next opponent. I always like to submit people, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way.

If you would like to thank anyone or greet somebody don’t hesitate.

I’d just like to thank everyone who has helped me get this far in the sport. All my training partners, Roger, every instructor I’ve ever trained under, and everyone I’ve met in jiujitsu who has helped me get to a compeition, offered me somewhere to stay, and all that.

I’d also like to highlight my sponsors, Black Eagle Martial Arts (http://www.black-eagle.co.uk/) and Scramble (http://www.scramblestuff.com/), for all the help they have given me.

Finally, I’d like to give a specific shout out to Connor my ‘best training partner’, and to my girlfriend Chun-yee, who has been incredibly supportive with a sport that has taken over my life!
