Fabio Gurgel: There is no secret for our success; it’s just hard work and passion”

Interwiew with Fabio Gurgel. Enjoy !

GrapplerINFO: Hi Fabio ! We are very grateful, that you’ve found some spare time, to give an interview for the BJJ fans. Could you tell us, how your adventure with BJJ started?

Fabio Gurgel: I started jiu-jitsu when I was 13 years old. I wanted to know some martial art and my sister’s boyfriend used to do bjj at Carlos Gracie jr’s academy, but he recommended me to go to Jacaré’s school which was smaller and where I would have more attention to learn, I’m very thankful to him forever.

Alliance is one of the Best Jiu-jitsu Academies around the World. Please tell us something about the history of your academy and what is your key to success?

Alliance is guided by Jacaré, it was founded by his oldest black belts in 1993, at that time our schools were fighting against each other in the tournaments, it was a very embarrassing situation, so we decided to merge all the schools under one flag. Alliance was born!! There is no secret for our success; it’s just hard work and passion for do what we love to do.

What are your main plans for 2010?

We know that every year the challenge is bigger, to keep ourselves on the top we need to improve our organization a lot, keep our students very motivated and support our schools even more, but we are doing our home work and we will try to get all the “grand slam” titles in 2010, starting with the Europeans going thru Pan-ams, Brazilian and of course the worlds.

Your friend Jacare had a serious accident during the training. How did the rehabilitation go? Is everything all right now?

Jacaré is doing better then ever, Alliance will be lead by our Master and we will go with full power in 2010.

Alliance has got a few academies here In Poland. Are you planning to visit our country one day? Have you ever heard about any polish fighters?

Alexandre Paiva runs the Alliance academies there in Poland and he speaks very high about the fighters. I know that the Polish guys are very tough. I saw many of them fighting in the Europeans.

In your opinion, which competitors are currently the best in Gi and no Gi in the world?

There are many great fighters out there, but to say the top 5 in my opinion are Roger Gracie, Cobrinha, Michael Langhi, Barral and Marcelinho Garcia.

What is your biggest success as a fighter and as a coach?

As a fighter 4 x world champion, as a coach there are so many moments, but lets say the last 2 Alliance titles and the 3 x Marcelinho’s ADCC titles.

Do you remember your biggest loss?

Final of the open division on the worlds 1997.

How long did it take you to receive a black belt?

6 years

Will we ever see again Marcelo Garcia in MMA? The reason of his loss in his debut was not enough preparation or a tactical mistake?

Many things happened before the fight, some decisions were made wrong and the result was his loss. It is difficult to point just one reason, but as everyone knows he is an incredible talent and if he wants to fight again some day I’m sure he will succeed.

Marcelinho and Cobrinha lost the finals in their weight categories. What skill did they lack to achieve victory?

They fought against two great fighters, the fights were very even but the luck went to the other side that day. They also fought very well and we don’t have any excuses or regrets, they are training for the next…

What are your comments on this year’s ADCC? Did any of the results surprise you?

The level was pretty high so everyone could win. Braulio was the best but I wouldn’t say that it surprised me, he was very well known already…

What is the most important part in Jiu-Jitsu training? What is your advice for new BJJ students?

Work on the basics, find out the details and be sure that you are learning in a good school.

Thanks for the interview, and we wish you success and all the best in your further undertakings

Thank you very much. It was a pleasure to talk to your readers and I hope I can visit this country some day in the near future.
